The UW Health Transplant Center is one of the few transplant centers in the country that has transplanted more than 12,000 kidneys.

Veterans across the country who are in need of a life-saving liver or kidney transplant now can receive these procedures at one of the top transplant centers in the nation, MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute, thanks to the recent inclusion of the MedStar Health program in the Veterans Health Administration network.

Last December, Sophia Jackson was watching the news when she saw the story of Vadrien Alston, a New York City police officer and mother of two who was in need of a kidney transplant. Jackson was so moved by the story that she decided to travel to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center to help.

The U.S. crossed a major milestone Friday, conducting its one millionth organ transplant. Evan Williams is grateful to be one of that million. “All of a sudden I saw Froedtert calling and so I answered the phone and it was the transplant team saying, ‘hey Evan we found a match for you.'” said Williams.

UW Health welcomed its first patients to the new Pleasant T. Rowland Transplant Clinic at University Hospital this morning. The new 10,000-square-foot clinic serves adult patients who are being evaluated for or who have received an organ transplant, as well as those who give the gift of life through living organ donation.

When Walter Cervantes learned he needed a new liver in 2002, the last person he wanted to ask was his close friend Rosie Lewis. Back then, living liver donation—in which a healthy person gives a portion of their liver to a patient in need—was a new concept. This year, they celebrated the procedure’s 20th anniversary.
