The Donor Care Network has designated Loyola University Medical Center as a Center of Excellence. The Donor Care Network helps ensure living kidney donors are treated with the utmost courtesy and respect by implementing best practices and recognizing facilities that adhere to their guiding principles. The designation will help Loyola improve patient access to living kidney donor transplants through the National Kidney Registry.

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) rank #15 in the United States and #53 globally on Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2022,” which ranks 2,200 hospitals in 27 countries based on their consistent excellence, innovation and top talent.

For National Donate Life Month, Allegheny Health Network will hold several events across 10 hospitals to encourage staff, patients, and visitors to learn more about organ donation and how to become a registered organ donor.

Patients in need of transplant in the Mid-Atlantic region continue to benefit from the renowned expertise and exceptional outcomes of the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute team. With a steadfast focus on providing optimal clinical care, the team remains a national leader in life-saving transplants such as kidney, pancreas, liver, and small bowel transplants during the pandemic.

The risk of major complications for people who donate a kidney via laparoscopic surgery is minimal. That is the conclusion of a 20-year Mayo Clinic study of more than 3,000 living kidney donors. Only 2.5% of patients in the study experienced major complications, and all recovered completely.

Inspired by a friend’s Facebook post about donating a kidney to a friend’s son, Anthony Cernera has since made three living organ donations – a kidney to a stranger named Lance in 2016, followed by stem cells to a leukemia patient in 2017, and most recently, a portion of his liver to another stranger, Martin, in 2020

The Kidney Transplant Center at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center has joined the Donor Care Network Centers of Excellence, a national group of high-performance transplant centers.

In 2019, Tyler Colman became the first in Colorado to donate a kidney through the National Kidney Registry’s Voucher Program, which allows donors to give priority to up to five people – usually loved ones or friends – to receive a kidney should they need one in the future.
